Obaseki Reiterates Call For State Police, Says It's Crucial For Effective Security

Godwin Obaseki, Governor of Edo State, Nigeria

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has once again called for the creation of state police, arguing that it is crucial for effective security architecture in the country.

Obaseki made the call while speaking at an event on security in Benin City on Monday, December 11, 2023. He said the current centralized police system is inadequate and ineffective in addressing the security challenges facing the country.

“The current security architecture in Nigeria is not working. We need to decentralize the police system and create state police to effectively address the security challenges we are facing,” Obaseki said.

The governor said that state police would allow states to tailor their security strategies to their specific needs and challenges. He added that it would also make police officers more accountable to the communities they serve.

“State police will allow us to have police officers who are familiar with the terrain and the people they are serving. This will make them more effective in preventing and responding to crime,” Obaseki said.

Obaseki is not the only governor who has called for state police. Governors from other states, including Kaduna, Lagos, and Ekiti, have also made similar calls in recent months.

The call for state police has been met with mixed reactions. Some people believe that it is necessary to improve security, while others are concerned that it could lead to abuses of power.

The Nigerian government has so far been resistant to the calls for state police. However, with the increasing security challenges facing the country, the pressure for reform is likely to continue to grow.
